"No excuses" is one of the famous quotes of the legendary business tycoon Dan Lok. A man who dared failure in the quest for success at the early age of 17.
We all know how storybooks end; 'and they lived happily ever after'. But life is no storybook, here, ' you will make your happily ever after. Or you can otherwise say, 'Life is not a storybook, but a story booked'.
The touching decisions of Dan Lok to add value to his mother's life brought him fortune beyond his wildest dreams. When I stare at the logo of Adidas as a brand, their slogan 'Impossible is nothing' is the motivation I get. I wonder if Dan Lok did stare at it before he made his moves.
A little biography
Dan Lok was born in Hong Kong, China on November 24, 1984. His father's name is M. Lok and his mother's name has remained undisclosed.
He is a Chines- Canadian due to his fate being decided at his early stage of life. As said by Dan Lok "I grew up in Hong Kong with enough money supplied by my Dad to always have $100 in my pocket. I had zero ambition. I was not interested in success. But my parents divorced when I was 16, and everything changed."
When things fall apart
Indeed everything changed. Forced to immigrate to Canada with his mother due to the divorce, his comfort was turned upside down. He had to live in a one-bedroom flat of low rent with his mother in the neighbourhood of Vancouver.
No more easy $100 in his pocket and having to make a sleeping bag on his bed. Dan Lok was not a school freak, though many said he did complete his college education, it is claimed he dropped out of college just to achieve his dreams. A dream that is indeed worth it.
No Excuses: the success move
Dan Lok said, " I will never forget the look of hopelessness on my mom's face". The situation got worse one day as the mother was still receiving money from the dad to take care of herself and Dan.
The father claimed to have gone bankrupt and could no longer afford the bills. With the Mom's limited work experience and no paying job, Dan had to make a move.
He supported them by getting a part-time job at a grocery store his first and last ever job, when he was made to realise that his character makes him unemployable.
Dan failed in thirteen different business ventures in a row within three years and just at the age of twenty-one, he was already $150,000 in debt. It brought a lot of shame and worry to the mom but Dan wouldn't just quit. "I never gave up because I couldn't afford to quit- and if you don't quit, then you can't fail"-Dan Lok.
A date with success
The easiest way to travel is through books and I will also say "self-education is important for personal growth". Claude Hopkin's book "Scientific Advertising" made him interested in marketing and soon found a marketing expert Alan Jacques.
He received a newsletter from Alan Jacques who would promote his workshops. Some months later Dan went to the workshop because he had collected the newsletter.
Also, he loved his writings and dreamed to write like him.
On reaching the workshop he sat at the back only to be shocked that he is sitting close to Alan Jacques himself. With so much expression of gratitude and overjoyed reactions, he offers to buy lunch for Alan.
He appealed for Alan to be his mentee but he declined yet Dan was not ready to give up. Showing up in Alan's office more frequently and trying to do anything just to help, picking up trash and even mowing his lawn. It finally did pay off.
Living the life
Dan Lok tasted his first success after launching his one-man advertising firm. In his 12-month training with Alan, he did not make much money but he claimed that was his first "million dollar" year.
Knowing that being mentored by a professional like Alan Jacques was worth millions he did go ahead to make it a reality. He started generating millions of dollars from his sales letter and in a few year's time he started earning six figures.
He could now give Mom the life she deserved and also bought a new apartment for his father. He invested his earnings into real estate and at 27 he was a multimillionaire. Retired at an early age since his business could operate without his presence and spent some time enjoying his worthwhile labour and was back again.
